All inteligent people are geeks somehow.
obviously NOBODY was able to relate to Jesus at his time since everyone were complete idiots - that is why Jesus wanted to correct them even if it meant giving his whole life away
Only a geek would have that tenacity

Why is it always "offensive" to people whenever someone implies that Jesus may have been a "man"? or a "human"?
For me it is interesting and not disrespectful at all
a jew going out of his way to examine another religion - not a bad thing

Hi James - regarding question b, why was Jesus drawing in the sand, I wonder if as in any good story, the clue has been hidden earlier in the book; if you read Daniel chapter 5, it speaks of a human hand appearing and writing- and Daniel reveals the meaning of the writing.

James - this is beautiful. One of my favorite stories as well. In addition to wondering why the man wasn't dragged out and what he was writing in the sand, I've wondered about the woman and the stones. I wonder what those stones sounded like when they were dropped. Did they bounce into each other? Did they hit the sand with the sound of a muffled bass drum? I wonder how many more times she heard that sound in her life and was immediately drawn back into the terror and grace of the moment. I wonder if sometimes she found herself picking up stones, only to drop them and hear the sound again, as she faced other violence later in life.

Hi James - really interesting article. I'm Christian - raised Roman Catholic, now pretty much just stick with general "Christian" identification and don't worry too much about labels, as long as the theology of whatever church I'm at is legitimate. I don't find your writing offensive. Actually, thanks for the opportunity to see an honest portrait of how non-Christians perceive Jesus. Though your theological interpretation is a little worrisome at times - mostly the part about why Jesus didn't condemn the woman, which other people have commented on - you say you're not a Christian, so I don't feel like you're presenting your writing as being representative of what Christians would say, theologically. You're interpreting the passage as you understand it.

What was Jesus writing on the ground? Oh goodness the possibilities. I wish I knew - and then again maybe I don't. Who knows. Speculation about the "what if's" of history is fun. But still just speculation. By the way, I like how you refer to the action as "doodling" - I feel like it captures what was really going on in the scene.

So, I have a question for you (and I apologize if you've already answered this elsewhere, which you probably have. I've only read this posting) - with Jesus as a childhood superhero, why not Christianity? Any particular religious leaning now? And if so, why that one?
