My most frequent excuses:
* I am a Girl. I use to teach martial arts. I have the knowledge, experience, and talent. But most schools are owned by men. I don't think seriously about opening my own school because I 'know' nobody would want to learn from a woman.
* I am Too Old. I also think that even if some people think its cool that I know all this stuff, I am not as agile, fast, or strong as I use to be. It will only get worse.
* I am Not Passionate Enough. I must be filled with passion in order to commit to making IT my work.
* I Can't Pick Just One. I have so many talents and interests, how could I possibly pick just one.
Ugh, what a bunch of malarkey. I'll be thinking a lot about excuses and how they may be some of the best things that ever happened to me. Thanks for the turnaround.

Here's my personal "reasoning": As far as life goes, as an observer I marvel at all of it and have many interests and yearnings but lack genuine passion, drive and ambition to pursue any of them. While very diligent and good at what I do for a living, and considerate of the needs of those around me it is in great part from a conditioned mindset of being ready to respond to my environment. All that makes me a reactive person but not a self-propelled wheel (to quote F.N.) and I have never developed an ability to act from a core creative impulse. Emphasis is on "creative" - I know it's in there but being in survival mode most of my life, I've never found the space and energies to bring my creativity to the surface long enough for them to manifest.

My Dad was a welder with 5 kids. I wanted to go to a new all-boys parochial high school near my home, but Dad couldn't afford the tuition. That could have been my excuse for not going - but all my buddies were going there, and I really wanted to be with them. So, I convinced my Dad to let me take the entrance exam. I placed 2nd on the exam and found out that the top 10 applicants got free tuition for a year. So, freshman year was paid for. Then I found out that if I finished in the top 5 of my class(based on GPA) I could get free tuition for the 2nd year. For the junior and senior years it was reduced to the top 3. There were 176 guys in my class at this school. I quickly figured out I wasn't the smartest guy in my class, but I decided no one was going to outwork me. I often spent 60 hours a week outside class working on homework and studying for tests. I developed a photograhic memory. I graduated co-valedictorian of my class. I qualified for an NROTC scholarship (full tuition) to college and after the service, I went back to school on the GI Bill and got a Master's Degree in Biology. My dad never paid a nickle for any of my education. You don't always have to be the smartest or most talented to succeed. You just have to be willing to work harder than the other guy. Best self-taught lesson I ever learned.

Love this article, hopefully it helps people become more accountable and stop blaming others and circumstance. Great advice and applicable to those who make excuses about exercise too!

You've named my top 3 favorite success stories. McDonalds, Microsoft and FedEx. Sometimes you just have to take a wild risk and hope it pays off. Though if it doesn't, learn from it and move on.

I used the eff it principle too. For a long time I wanted to buy foreclosed homes and rent them, but I wasn't very handy and I was always waiting for a better deal to avail itself. Finally I just went for it and learned as I went. Today, one year later, I have 2 occupied rental properties was positive cash flow of $1,100 to $1,200 per month.
